Mrs. Rees- Last post of school year

Can you believe how fast 09-10 has gone? What a great year so far!

Some students have asked about extra credit. There is a poster in class listing all opportunities.
Criteria: Turned in by Wednesday, June 16th and COMPLETE. There is no "partial" extra credit,
only an atta-boy for incomplete or late work.


Algebra: Final Exam (150 points) is June 15th. Review packet is due June 15th. YOU ARE SO CLOSE!

8th Science: We began the Cumulative Essay (150 points) on Friday. We will work in class Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in class and at home. The typed essay is due Thursday morning. Please see handout given Monday for specifics.

Pre-Algebra: Final Exam (150 points) is June 15th. Review packet is due June 15th. An "Interview with Dr. Qepse" is due June 17th.

6th Science: We began Ecosystems today. Our chapter project includes an essay, poster, and video. The typed essay is 50 points and the poster is 50 points.

This will be my final HW blog post for the school year. As I stated earlier, it will mainly be a repeat of what I posted the other day.

6th - Our final activity is a poster collage portraying our identity in Christ.

7th - Continuing & concluding the book of Revelation. Student will sell coffee before school on Mon 21 June as a final Growing Liberia's Children fund raiser.

NIEMAN - WEEK OF 7 JUNE

Parents and students...I apologize for not having this blog updated sooner. My policy is to update it each Thursday; and I did not do so last week - and to compound matters - CTCS lost its internet for the better part of two days.

Below I'll just briefly give the highlights and most urgent and timely info for the remainder of this week. I'll post one final time this year on Thursday 10 June.

Mrs. Decker's Last Post for 2009-2010!

I'm listing all of the things we're trying to finish/accomplish in these last two weeks. Our schedule changes a lot during this time of year, so approximate due dates are given where needed. Students should use their planner daily to record "up to the minute" accurate assignments.

6th Grade English/Social Studies/Math
Mythology: Atalanta, Persephone, Bellerophon, and Echo worksheets. Your original myth.
Grammar: 337-340. We're done!
Lit Circles: meetings are Tuesdays and Fridays
Social Studies: Chapter 11 test- open book- Tuesday, 6/8. We will read Chapter 12 in class, no test.
Math: We will finish Chapter 10 on Friday, 6/18. Daily lessons plus time for extra credit!

Our Town: We will finish our reading of the play and watch a great production of it starring Paul Newman and Jane Curtain.

7th/8th Grade Health - Mrs. Henzel, - May 25-June 1

Our last health unit of this year covers Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs. Students are required to work with a partner to complete a poster or powerpoint project on one of those topics that will be presented in class on Tuesday, June 1. The majority of the project should be done in class Tuesday, May 25, Thursday, May 27, and Tuesday, June 1, but students may need to do some work at home to make sure their projects are complete and thorough.

Topic assignments and project descriptions were handed out in class on Tuesday, May 25. Remember, use in-class time wisely, follow the steps on your project description, and remember that your project should be able to effectively "teach" others.

7TH LIFE SCIENCE

FANTASTIC job on all your Food Lab assignments. I'm hearing such great things from all of you about what you are doing, discussing, and learning. Really great to hear. I know....I know....some of the topics and ideas are disgusting...some radical or controversial...develop your critical thinking to explore the concepts and seek the truth.

The only assignment due this week is: Web Site Write Up - Due Tues 25 May. This is the last preassigned work due; we will discuss, debrief, journal, play a few rounds of Nutrition Bingo, and have a "Personal Thoughts" quiz on Fri 28. You cannot study for this quiz; just tell me what you already know!

Ch 19 Body Systems begins the following week.

We'll have wrapped up the Multi-Cultural Fair on Thurs 20 May and next week shift back to the text material and the events leading to the US Civil War.

6th - Continuing with Acts. Notes and class discussion. Continue to study the 66 books of the Bible for the quiz - given each Thurs until you get 100% correct!

7th - We'll wrap up James and finish with Revelation for the year.

8th - Ongoing work with Ladle and Westminster Manor. More Portfolio work and, possibly, another field trip to Feeding America.

7TH LIFE SCIENCE

We're well underway with our Food Lab unit. Lots of good discussion and information to process. My objective is to expose the students to what it is we eat, take for granted as being "healthy" and to gain a good grasp of diet, exercise, nutrition and overall health. This unit requires many out-of-class activities...and yes...students do need to watch the movie Super size Me! Please watch it with them! All major assignment due dates are listed below and each requires a formal write-up.

Periodic journal and reflection assignments will be given as well. .

ASSIGNMENTS:

FRI 13 MAY - In-class work on their food journal. Students will be able to type and print this first assignment in class.

We've wrapped up our textbook analysis of the roots of the US civil war and will now focus for a time on a great biography of A. Lincoln and work on the Multi Cultural Fair which is on Thurs 20 May. NIEMAN - WEEK OF 10 MAY

MS BIBLE / CHRISTIAN EDU

6th -
We've begun the birth of the church in Acts. Students will earn a grade for this last quarter of bible class...encourage your son/daughter to stay current with classwork and assignments. This next week will include notes, lecture, and scripture lessons from Acts.


7th -
We've finished Hebrews, and will examine James before finishing with Revelations for the year.


8th - We're continuing working with Ladle as well as visiting with the folks at Westminster Manor. Be on the lookout for some wrap-up activities, portfolio work, a guest speaker, and maybe one more field trip.

7TH LIFE SCIENCE

T
his week we'll wrap up our extensive unit on plants with a CH 11 TEST on Monday 10 May. Please study and review for this test over the weekend! By the way...plants in the garden look GREAT!

After our test Monday, we'll begin our unit on body systems, food, and nutrition. A packet will be given to the students on
Tuesday 11 May with all the information and details of this upcoming unit. Assignments for the first part of the week will be from this packet.


8TH US HISTORY

We'll wrap up Ch 11 with a TEST on Friday 7 May. Students are tracking their grades in class this last quarter of Jr. High - encourage them to do their very best on the assignments and assessments given - it's not how you start a race but how you finish. Talk to your son/daughter about what we're doing in class with their grades.

NIEMAN - WEEKS OF 19 APR & 26 APR

COMBINING WEEKS AS 6TH GRADERS WILL BE AT CAMP, 7TH GRADERS HERE, AND 8TH IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

MS BIBLE/CHRISTIAN EDU

6TH - We've wrapped up our examination of the gospels and will now shift into Acts and the birth of the Christian church. Students and parents can expect a noticeable shift in class work, assignments and so on in Bible for the 4th quarter. Books of the Bible due from memory on Monday 3 May.


7th - We'll be working on our chapel presentation, working in the garden, and moving ahead with Ch 11 and plants. NOTE - students need to WEAR grubby gardening clothes TO SCHOOL on: Tues 20 and Thurs 22 as we'll be in the garden then. They will have to change into school uniforms for the rest of the day.


8th - We'll work again with Ladle and Westminster Manor folks on Fri 23 Apr.


7TH LIFE SCIENCE

We'll continue our look at plants / ch 11 this week and next with Mrs. Rees while I'm out. All assignments for week of 19 Apr will be done in class as we have gardening and a chapel presentation to work on. NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK.

8th US HISTORY

We've wrapped up our examination of slavery and will begin Ch 11 / Westward Expansion. This material will have some good connections to our DC trip...as well as San Diego!

Assignments:

Mon 19 Apr - USA map given. Study a bit each night...quiz on all 50 US states on Fri 19 Apr.

Wed 21 Apr - Spanish and the SW wksht due.

We'll talk a bit more about our trip this week, too. Students have a packing list - parents, there is a copy in your parent file along with my cell # while we're there.

Students will have an evening journal assignment worth 60 points (6 10-point entries) that must be completed before we leave the east coast.

7th & 8th Grade Health - Mrs. Henzel - Week of 4/6

*Students will have Health class for Supplementary Curriculum on Tuesday/Thursday throughout April and then again May 25-June 1. There will be minimal homework assignments for these classes, but it is important for students to do what is assigned and participate in class. Our April Health unit will cover Health Influences/Decision-Making and Self-Esteem/Body Image. May's unit will cover Controlled Substances/Substance Abuse

Due Thursday, 4/8 - Find and bring in one advertisement for a product. This can be clipped from a magazine, newspaper, or printed off the internet. Be sure to bring in the whole ad, pictures and all. Be prepared to talk how the ad "convinces" us to buy the product.
